They have reached us, finally: geo services are ubiquitous, not only directly via mapping services and navigation systems, but also indirectly and hidden inside value-adding services for industry, government, and citizens. The Oxera report done for Google in 2013 teaches us numbers about economic importance of geo services: Geo services global revenues are estimated at 150 - 270 billion US$ per year, their global added value is seen at 100 billion US$. They aid faster emergency response, save billions of litres of gasoline each year, can improve agricultural irrigation, facilitate competition, and are instrumental for a myriad more purposes.
Open Source Geo solutions meantime are established as a mature and robust option for geosolutions, fully recognized by users as an alternative to commercial products. Actually, Open Source Geo constitutes a significant economic factor in today's GIS industry, at a massively increasing rate, unleashing the potential of GIS and modern geospatial technology at affordable prices, and without vendor lock-in.
FOSS4G is the flagship conference series of OSGeo, the worldwide acting Open Source Geospatial Foundation. OSGeo is a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to support the collaborative development of open source geospatial software, and promote its widespread use. Among others, OSGeo also serves as an outreach and advocacy organization for the open source geospatial community, and provides a common forum and shared infrastructure for improving cross-project collaboration.
FOSS4G-Europe is the pan-Europen annual event, together with the global FOSS4G conference (2014: Portland, Oregon, US), FOSS4G Southeast Asia, FOSS4G South America, and further more. In July 2014, it will be hosted at Jacobs University Bremen, bringing together code contributors, developers and implementers with users, academic researchers, agencies, managers and decision makers.
Previous FOSS4G events in Europe have attracted from 250 up to 800 delegates – with the massive growth of interest in Open Source Geo in Europe driven by the implementation of INSPIRE we expect to have an equally strong attendance. The hot topic of Big Data adds in extra interest by technologists and users.
I am very excited to be chairing FOSS4G-Europe 2014, together with aa team of highly renowned and skilled experts. We have nearly all of the ingredients needed to host a fantastic conference that will appeal to both the current FOSS4G community and to potential new users; the final ingredient is sponsorship.
